conifer tree branch droop

Hi all,  I live in wet south Wales.  I notice this drooping on my conifer.  Any ideas as to what's happening?  Do I cut off the branches or use string to tie them back up?  I think the conifer is possibly outgrowing its position.  Any ideas?

cheers
Steve

  • I would guess a cat has been climbing up your conifer after a bird... look at the base of the branches which are bent down and check if they're actually broken.  If they are, you'd be best cutting them off with secateurs.  If they're just bent, you could try pulling them back into their proper position in the conifer, and tie them gently into place using thick string - don't use polypropylene, you need something biodegradable in case you forget to remove it once the plant has regained its proper shape.   :)
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.

You can wire them too @steveoflancashire - either just onto another sturdy stem/branch, or right round the whole girth of the tree. Assuming, as @Liriodendron says, that the branch isn't damaged.
It's often done with topiary specimens, when the desired effect is to have a tidy column, and the plants don't always play ball  ;)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Many thanks; the branches are not broken, so I'll tie them up as you both have suggested
    Cheers
