Will cooked blackberry seeds sprout?

I'm making preserves and have just cooked up a pot of blackberries that I had in the freezer. After straining it I have a lot of pulp and seeds left. If I put them in the compost will they sprout, or will cooking them have killed the seeds?

  • Cooking should have killed the seeds. To make preserves I'm guessing you needed to reach boiling point in your cooking to sterilise the batch and this temperature will also kill seeds.

Putting anything sweet and cooked into your garden compost could attract people you would prefer to avoid.

    Very true!
Imagine the horror of looking out of your window and seeing Piers Morgan going through your compost bin

I hadn't added the sugar yet as there was a lot of excess water in the fruit so I was cooking it down. It ended up being less than I thought it would be so I just put it in the bin in the end. I wasn't sure if brambles were the kind of plant whose seeds survive fires etc.

where is it you live? 🤣

But I would agree - if the seeds have been boiled they will not germinate
