It's been very interesting reading everyone's comments.  I'm on sandy soil but have been thinking of J.As for a while to go behind a new rose bed I've cut a little way out from a beech hedge.  I've plumped for J.As to go between the roses and the hedge.  So thanks everyone - I've just splashed out on 3 Frilly Knickers from Hardy's!  Fingers crossed they do well, flower nicely, spread just enough and don't die!
