Builders sand in the garden

Is it harmful to plants  when used to lighten heavy clay soil?

    Yes
    builders sand often contains salt and sometimes toxins to stop weeds.
    It also helps to bind the cement, so builders sand will worsen the situation.
    I have personal experience from many yeas ago...

    Best thing is lots of organic matter, failing that, horticultural grit or sharp sand

  • Sharp sand is different from builders' sand and can be used (with lots of organic matter) to improve heavy soil.  Organic matter is the most important thing to use for this purpose, though.
    Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.
