Help / advice on winter care

Some help please to identify the attached image. I brought it early summer and it has grown to a round 3 feet as shown in the pictures. Could I also also for some advice on the winter care - do I need to cut down / remove heads etc? Thanks from a novice gardener!

  • It looks like an Alstromeria to me.  I've got a few in the garden and have never really given them a lot of attention at this time of year, but they've come good the next year.  I read on a Sarah Raven webpage that you should pull them up rather than cut them back.  I haven't dared to do this as I am afraid of losing the whole plant, so I have left them be for the time being.  I would be interested to see what others recommend too.

You can pull the stalks when they finish flowering (no need to worry about damaging the plant) or you can leave it to die back over the winter. It will grow fresh new stalks in spring.
  • Yep, Peruvia Lilies they are. I cut mie back by about a third a and leave the rest to give some protection over Winter. Stems will die back, pull them out in Spring when new growth appears. Haven't had a problem so far !!!!
  • N is a bit dicky on my PC in case nobody noticed !!
  • So is Peruvian Lily another name for Alstromeria? I didn't know that!
  • Thanks all for your help - much appreciated!

Lovely pic! I also got one of these beauties this year. It came with instructions to mulch it heavily (to several inches' depth) with bark over the winter for the first couple of years, as they aren't fully hardy till established.
