    Here’s what I would do.

    1. Get rid of the paving on the left. It’s too small to act as a seating area.
    2. Complete the horseshoe shape of the lawn by bringing the curve down to the top of the handrail.
    3. Turf the lawn.
    4. Move the clothes line which dominates the garden. Can it be moved to behind the building on the right. If it has to stay there, tuck it out of the way somewhere when it’s not in use.
    5. Create a seating/hard surface play area on the patch of soil in front of the brick wall where that green netting is. Maybe re-use the paving slabs once they have been jet washed.
    6. Get rid of the messy collection of pots on the wall.
    7. Move the bird bath somewhere more visible and put a bird feeding station near it.
    8. Find a better use for those cobbles. They look like an accidental spillage where they are.
    9. Change the steps into a graded path. Chose a slip free surface such as ashlar or bark clippings.
    10. Paint all the fencing dark grey
    11. Create a huge bed of dark red cosmos eg Rubenza on the left hand side.
    12. Divide that huge clump of geranium(?) on the right and have the smaller clumps as a running motif through the garden.

BenCotto Thank you so much. I was already planning to complete horse shoes shape and more patio playing area in lower from part. Just bought Karche K4 for washing. But you gave me so many great ideas. I am def going to do all of them, except I doubt one and is more of question, Why dark Grey color fence? Is this personal choice or add value somehow.

Thanks or taking time, really appreciated  <3

  • I like @BenCotto 's suggestions ... that'd make a gorgeous and very usable garden.

One tip ... re the washing line ... we have retractable washing lines fixed to our house wall .... when in use they clip into a ring on a post at the far side of the garden ... when not in use they retract and disappear ... that makes the whole garden useable and much more attractive. https://www.leangreenhome.co.uk/reviews/washing-lines/retractable

I'd never go back to a whirlygig washing line.

If you like red then I just looked up a gorgeous red clematis https://www.jparkers.co.uk/clematis-rouge-cardinal-0001787c
I'm not saying to buy it from there but it was a nice picture.  I chose this one because it is group 3 which means you cut it down each Jan/Feb (ish) to get good flowers so it will never get too large like your ivy did but it will need a support like a trellis.  I bought some wire mesh on a roll easy to fix to fence but leave a bit of a space, not tight.  You could plant it on the RH side but read up about planting away from rainshadow, providing a good planting hole and mulching.

Make sure you think about balance when you choose your planting.  You can, and will, move plants as you learn but easier to get it right up front.  Always look at what the full size will be, measure around the plant and fill the space with temporary flowers until it grows.

Here's a nice article about using red. https://www.longfield-gardens.com/article/How-to-Use-Red-in-Your-Flower-Garden

Enjoy the journey, gardening is addictive.
