Ferns are a good idea. It sounds like a useful spot for overwintering plants that don't like winter wet or frost.

My parents garden had an area like that sandwiched between their house and next door which was a total jungle of rhubarb and mint. Didnt look great but it tasted amazing and the small bed kept the invasive monster plants contained.
