Is it "talking with your mouth full", perhaps. @sustainedpeace - do you run workshops?

Self sufficient on an allotment... potatoes, cabbage, onions and boredom.  Self sufficiency in a way of calories isn't hard and doesn't take to much space, making it a balanced diet is also possible but takes more space and probably animals. but to actually turn it into a diet anyone would want to eat.. that is a challenge. Calorie wise we grew way more than 2 people need this year. nutrition wise we would be sick.
@Obelixx I came to the conclusion with my chickens they prefer marrows as they are soft, try boiling a bit of pumpkin and they will (or mine would) happily attack it, raw it languished until the ducks found it, they loved them.

@Skandi I always slice the pumpkins and marrows so the flesh and seeds are easy to access.  They dive straight into the green and yellow ones but not the undersized orange utchiki kuris.   They also love lettuce, cabbage, kale, dahlia flowers, sweetcorn, cooked potato peelings........   Never mind.  Th ebits of orange pumpkin will break down into the new dahlia bed and/ore be eaten by other organisms which amounts to the same thing.

I agree about self-sufficiency being nutritionally inadequate.  I can't grow enough grain to make bread or pasta.  Can't grow rice, ginger, avocadoes, mangoes and, illogical as it may seem, couldn't eat my own chooks or pigs or lambs or catch the fish we like to eat for a balanced and tasty diet.

My OH is quite upset that he hasn't had his daily mouthfulness. Well,he did insist on opening the tub of celebrations early and now they've all gone.   :D
