sensory garden etc

Some of our trainees have complex needs. We have trainees with learning disabilities such as Autism and Asperger’s. We are moving to a new site on December 19th and need of help to create a space in the garden for them to chill out or go to when the need arises.

This could be a sensory garden with an all-weather shelter, where they can sit and be calm, this is very important as they need to be able to process their thoughts and feelings.

We need help to create this space either with advice, help, or donations of plants, seating and sensory objects etc.

A church in my neighbourhood made a sensory garden in its grounds a few years ago.  They built five identical raised beds with wooden sleepers:  one each for sound, sight, touch, smell and taste.  The "sound" bed has a pond liner, water and a solar-powered fountain.  "Sight" has colourful flowery plants; "smell" has lavender and other fragrant plants; "taste" has culinary herbs and edible flowers; "touch" has plants with fuzzy and bristly leaves.

The garden is at our new site in Broughton Astley. Many thanks everyone x

  • I have no experience of creating sensory gardens, but the plants I love most in my garden in terms of senses are the ones that smell nice. My favourites are salvia, lavendula, Daphne "Eternal Fragrance", and Philadephus "Mrs E.L. Robinson".

Wishing you all the best in creating the new garden.

Artemisia absinthia is one of my favourite plants for its sensory qualities-silvery colour, foliage that is really nice to run hands through, and a hard-to-describe aroma when you crush it slightly. Smells a bit woody/musky.

What you describe is similar to what our Golden Hill does.

Contact Lucy Mitchell and she may be able to give some advice / assistance.

I volunteered there and enjoyed every minute.
Everyone is just trying to be Happy.....So lets help Them.
  • Many thanks and Merry Christmas everyone x
