Are my Agapanthus deciduous?

Hi there,

I thought my Agalanthus could be left out over winter but then I noticed half of them are turning yellow and dying back.

There's a high possibility there are two different types in the pot,  but should I keep them outside or try to shelter over the winter.

Thanks all.

Cheers,

Dave

The deciduous forms are hardier and can, in sheltered gardens, be left in the ground all winter as long as the soil isn't soggy.  I grow the evergreen ones in pots and move them to the shelter of the polytunnel for winter.

I agree depends where you are.  Mine are deciduous and established in a pot.  Just checked and they're mostly yellow but still have a bit of green and we've had a frost.  They might still be deciduous but to be safe you could put away this winter.
  • Agapanthus are from S Africa. If you are in any doubt, cover them over with hedge clippings or similar to keep them dry. Temps in Joburg get very low and there is even light frost but it almost never rains in winter! I agree with Obelixx, however, that the less hardy types, which remain in growth throughout the year, need to be kept frost-free.

  • Thanks so much for all the feedback everybody. I'll protect them over winter so to be on the safe side.

Hope everyone is keeping safe and well, and Happy Christmas 😀🎅🏻
