Epimedium X perralchicum 'Frohnleiten' is growing among the onoclea. It never ceases to amaze me when those soft marbled leaves emerge in spring -- they are so unlike the tough old leaves of the previous year which I try to remove before the new ones appear. This one is a spreader, making its way into any available spaces, good ground cover. It has bright yellow flowers.
I have Epimedium x versicolor ‘Sulphureum’ which looks similar to yours.
Thank you Papi Jo. I should have said 1m+ which I understand the Woodwardia achieve. I’m not sure that I can edit my post but I appreciate the alternatives for smaller spots.
The one that remains truly 'evergreen' here for me is polystichum munitum, the western sword fern. Unlike some ferns it doesn't collapse or get tattered. The fronds are best cut away in about April before the new croziers emerge. Some ferns are more 'wintergreen' in that they do keep their fronds over winter but I find they can get battered by bad weather sometimes. The abovementioned forms a substantial clump, almost like a small shrub, about 4 ft x 4 ft.
Here it is with the new growth emerging. The mature fronds are dark green and shiny, sorry I don't have a photo.
Thank you @Woodgreen. That’s a great suggestion and a fine looking clump of Polystichum (and the Dryopteris is a beautiful colour and very tempting too).
