I planted a few ferns ( apparently suitable for the conditions) in dry dappled shade last year but had to rescue them after a couple of months and put them back into pots. This was at the height of the heatwave. They survived and are well on their way to sprouting. Is it worth trying them back in the ground again?
@B3 it's something I do regularly -- put a fern in a pot to bulk it up, rescue it from drought or slugs et cetera. I put some ferns back in the soil two months ago. I'd still happily do it now. Given that you have dry shade, I'd try to make a rich humus-rich medium that is equally not too light, and be prepared to water this summer and next summer to help the ferns settle.
I have been gathering up various ferns from around my plot with a view to having a woodland gladey bit but having the patience of a gnat I would like to buy some (a whole lot) to cover the baldy bits. Can anyone recommend a good supplier? Thank you.
@plant pauper I can recommend the Fern Nursery in Lincs. They did a talk at our Gardening Club. I don't thing you can buy on line but they are very knowledgeable and helpful. They did explain that you can go to a Garden Centre and purchase a fern such as Polystichum setiferum but it won't be such a good form as one purchased from a specialist grower. I grow this fern, I often look when out to see if I can improve on it but the one I have is superior.
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.
