Unknown vegetable

Hi can anyone tell me what this is? It popped up in my vegetable garden. It has what appears to be spiked fruit and is about 1-2 feet high. Thanks

  • It’s a Thorn apple ... Datura stramonium ... pops up in warm weather ... poisonous

  • Thanks very much from Adelaide Australia, have never seen this before but is most definitely Datura Stramonium, came up after applying fertilizer to garden bed at the end of winter. I suppose the next question is how to safely dispose of the plant to stop germination to start again?

When it appears here from time to time we pull it up and bung it in the compost before the seeds are ripe.
As your weather will be more likely to ripen seeds than ours I’d pull it up and leave it in a bucket of water to rot down in the hope the seeds rot too. But if it does seed it’s not a disaster ... it’s a fascinating and strangely beautiful flower and easily recognised so you can pull them up before they set seeds next time 😎

  • Dhatura or Datura. I don't know which variety but as soon as I saw first picture I thought of Dhatura. Then I noticed  white flower appearing in third picture . It is poisonous so be careful. the flowers are Trumpet shape , I have seen yellow, pinkish and white flower plants growing in Kenya, India, Singapore, Indonesia and USA.

I was wondering where you were. We had some come up the other year. They seem to have been dormant for a very long time and then one hot summer was the right conditions for them to germinate. If you cut the seed pods off and dispose of them, you can compost the rest safely.

I didn't realise that that is the same plant that I saw swallowing a bus shelter last year. They are certainly spectacular!
    In London. Keen but lazy.

Mine only grew to 2 ft  or so.  The seed are thought to be hallucinogenic. I haven't tried it.
