  • Mine must be plebs then - they eat white fat balls, peanuts and even some sunflower seed!
  • @cornelly I've never heard that name for a wagtail before, but it certainly fits!
  • @Bijdezee We will definitely be sticking around for at least a good few years, although this is probably not our "forever" home, so I am trying to think of how to help wildlife in the semi-long term. I have got a bareroot apple tree on order, but due to space it will have to be container grown at the other end of the garden to the bird feeders that hang off the shed. Fingers crossed it will still help, even if it's a little way away from the feeders! Reassuring to hear that it took a little time before you started seeing greater variety of birds in your garden, so thanks. Some of the birds you've mentioned I have never seen before - sounds like a lovely range of birds to see!

I know the Pied Wagtail as white, as there are Grey and Yellow wagtail's, strangely enough the Grey Wagtail has a lot of yellow on its breast.
  • @fidgetbones and @strelitzia32 - interesting! I doubt I will get any woodpeckers where I am, but I may need to source some pink fat blocks in order to conduct an experiment.

Am also definitely upping the sunflower hearts given what people have said on this thread; they seem to be even more popular with the birds than I realised.
  • @cornelly Yes, I've heard that Grey Wagtails can be surprisingly colourful, although I've never had the pleasure of seeing one (or a Yellow!). The one that visits me is definitely the bog standard Pied Wagtail (if you can call anything "bog standard" that's that pretty). Most of the photos I've tried to take come out as as a grey blur, because, as your "trotty" name suggests, he hardly ever sits still! Here are a few that I did manage to get when he finally stayed in one place for a moment:

You did well to get those clear pics, have had grey's in the garden but very rare.
  • @cornelly Thank you, it was a bit of a struggle! I have to thank my parents for giving me their old camera, because I'd never have managed to get those shots on my phone.

Our houses are Dorma type with flat roof's, usually a pool of water which Wagtails like, but they do go down to below the feeders to get droppings, your parents old camera has done you well, WillowBark.
