CAN I PLANT A POT GROWN ROSE IN DECEMBER IN SCOTLAND ?

I've been given a beautiful Giardina climbing rose for my birthday - beg of December.  It's been pot grown but since I received it, we've had nothing but frost, ice and snow - I don't know what to do with it - would rather it was in the ground but is it safe to plant it out now?  I don't have a greenhouse.  Hope someone can advise - I don't want to lose it!   Thank you Patricia

Just wait until there's a mild spell forecast. Anything potted can be planted as long as the ground isn't frozen. Ideally when there isn't going to be any frost for a couple of days. I've just planted a hydrangea I lifted about ten days ago, and I did a philadelphus not long before that - just before the frost/fog/snow etc last week.  :)
Once planted, it'll be fine. You can add a mulch of compost or similar round about it, which gives a bit of protection while it establishes. It won't need watering once it's initially watered in either  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Thanks so much for the advice - will give that a go..and keep everything crossed! :)
