Local nurseries and suppliers may have a more limited range than bigger companies like Hedges Direct so definitely worth checking prices but the HD site should include advice on best varieties fro t-your soil and situation.

Also best to buy "maiden" whips as they are cheap, easy to plant and establish very quickly.

Have a look round locally. Last year I ordered Box hedging from Grasslands after extensive online research - they were the best value I could find for nice big plants with plenty of instant impact.

Thank you Loxley! I'll have a look and also see what's around locally

  • @sianrecovery I haven't bought for the purposes of hedging, and this is a fruit specialist nursery, but I bought a bareroot blackthorn (for sloes) from Blackmoor Nurseries and was really impressed with their service. The plant arrived promptly and well packaged to protect it during transit, and they included a little booklet about the cultural needs of different plants. I've planted mine in a large container and, whilst it's still sleeping at the moment, it seems to be in good condition. I would definitely recommend them if adding something like sloes or guelder rose to your hedge is something you'd like.
