Otis has been a regular this year, normally swinging by for breakfast. His OH is less frequent but he did have a bit of a tiff with another male this morning so maybe something is going on ;)

Is it also possible that our constant war against slugs and snails helps to reduce their natural food source ?
    No.

Our garden is heaving with slugs and snails, we don’t bother to try and control them but don’t see that many thrushes. However, I think they are a lot shyer than the blackbirds, and tend to hang around out of sight of the house. I do find broken snail shells on convenient rocks, so I’m sure they are out there.
The blackbirds are just more obvious, arguing with each other on the lawn, hanging around waiting for food, and even landing on the windowsill to remind us to throw out some suet nibbles. Great fun!
  • Our male blackbird likes fossicking in the beech leaves, while his Mrs hangs about under the seed feeder waiting for the finches to drop some morsels.  She's also partial to rose hips, balancing on the waving branchlets to peck at them.
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.

My blackbirds love the berries of my amelanchier tree and also the berries of the leycesteria.
East Dorset, new (to me) rather neglected garden.
  • We have a resident pair of black birds. The Male is fondly nicknamed Fat Ball Freddie as he hangs around the fat balls and decides who gets some and who doesn't.

We can hear them squarking at dusk and it does seem to be louder than previous years (I assume it is the blackbirds) so hopefully there are more. I always chuckle when one flies from one place to another and they chirp really loud 😂😂
