Bubble wrap to protect olive tree

Hi all. I have a 15 year or so old olive tree fairly established. During the summer I moved it to much larger frost proof large pot. Usually over the winter I bubble wrapped the old pot to protect the roots.
My simple question is now the roots should be safe from frost will it harm the tree if I bubble wrap the trunk below the leaves as some extra insulation?
I don’t want to harm the tree of course but also aware it’s getting really cold out there at the moment.
I hope my question isn’t as ridiculous as it sounds as I write it! Maybe I’m over protective of it!
Any help much appreciated.

  • @paulynorf : No harm in wrapping the pot as before - the foliage is fairly 'robust'. *Wind is likely to be your enemy -depends on location. Good luck in 2021!!

At fifteen years old, I think you have done enough for the plant. So long as it is kept somewhere dry-ish, which is tucked against a southerly wall, there should be no need to wrap trunks or branches.
  • The new pot is frost-proof which means the pot won't crack - but it won't be any better at protecting the olive roots from freezing than the old pot was.  If it needed wrapping in bubble wrap in previous winters to protect the roots, it'll still need doing, I reckon...

I don't think wrapping the trunk in something waterproof like bubble wrap is generally recommended though.

Bubble wrapping the pot is a good idea but never the trunk or stems.  They need air flow so only ever use fleece on those.

Although we don't have continual frosts and snow here - we do get this weather for a few days (brass monkey)!!  The  olive trees we have are fine without protection.  Coldest : -6°C and swimming pool frozen.  Trees are pruned in December/January.

  • Thanks to you all for such sound advice. Excellent forum to use. Best. Paul
