Brown Rot on apples - what to do with leaves.

My friend has an apple tree and the apples this year have suffered with brown rot.  I know that she should pick off any apples still remaining on the tree and pick up any from the ground to prevent reinfection next year.  However, should she also pick up the fallen leaves at soil level at base of tree?  Could they be a cause of reinfection next year?

Thank you in advance for any advice.

  • Yes, clearing and disposing of fallen leaves from beneath fruit trees (especially if they have any diseases) is recommended practice.  Mulching the ground with garden compost after removing the fallen leaves and fruit is also of benefit.
