Neighbour's Laurel hedge

Hi All, our neighbour's Laurel hedge is quite gappy which doesn't give either of us much privacy. Their cats also use the gaps to access our garden. This is our 3rd year in our property and the hedge was already planted possibly 2-3 years before we moved in. We are looking to have our garden landscaped and are wondering if a fence with concrete posts and gravel boards could be installed with a small gap between the hedge and fence.
Any advice would be welcomed!

I don't think that will be a problem, as long as the fence is on your land. You wouldn't need a tall fence either as laurel, once it gets going, grows dense and tall.

  • Thanks Lizzie27, that's good to know. Yes, the fence will be on our side.

If you're on good terms with the neighbour it might be worth asking them about pruning the hedge, which will encourage it to bush out lower down and result in a better hedge in a few years' time.

  • Hi JennyJ, thanks for your reply. Yes, we get on well with them in fact, he cuts the hedge back from our side when asked but it's still very gappy.

They'd probably need to cut the main trunks quite a lot lower to make it bush out and grow thick, and people are often reluctant to do that. There's a huge thread on the subject somewhere on here.
