Thalictrum delavayi

  • I have had success with Ammi Major - tall, airy white flowers.  I have grown from seed and they take a while to get going but always end up doing well - look good amongst other tall flowers.  Some of the tall Cosmos are flower well but can get very woody as the summer wears on.

Agree with the others re Thalictrum. Great plant, but they take a couple of years to flower well. I'm glad I sowed them from seed but if I had to do it again I would just buy them. This year I sowed Scabiosa ochrolueca in June, all signs are that they will flower next year so maybe from an early sowing they'd have flowered in the first year. But most perennials that flower in their first year still don't put on too much of a show until year 2.

I've got three thals to plant out next year. I hear they can make for a slug feast, so have kept them in pots. Next year, when they are a good height (against molluscs), I
plant to plant in the ground.

Have you found that ammi self seed? I hear they are best sown in the autumn, to make for good, strong plants.  Is it too late now?
  • I would also try Thalictrum aquilegifolium which I find easy to grow from seed and it bulks up quickly.  Gaura is another one which grows even more quickly and although slightly tender the Agastaches such as "Sangria" are easy and quick off the mark if you have space to fill. Other easy and quick options are Digitalis varieties, Trifolium (red or white), Rudbeckias and Dahlias.
  • Christine, I have been pining after Ammi for a while now. They are so graceful. I'm not very good with seeds. Will they flower in the first year?
I have Gaura - love it!

I think the Thal Delavayi is my favourite meadow rue.
  • All are wonderful.
The first to flower here is Thalictrum aquifolium.
Another favourite Is Thalictrum delavayi Hewitt's Double.

For a dwarf one try Thalictrum kiusianum.
