Variegated Conifer or a dying one!

Hello

Managed to pick up 2 of these confiers in pots for £5 each so am very pleased about that. However, can anyone out there tell me if they are a variegated variety or dying! If the latter, what can I do to help them.
Many thanks, Andrew

  • They are variegated.   :)

There's a bit of dieback on the base of the plant on the right hand side, which could be why they were cheap...  make sure they don't dry out, especially if you're planning to keep them in pots.  I don't know the variety, hopefully it's not a fast-growing one - but there's not a lot of compost in a pot that size, so be prepared to put them into larger containers.
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.
  • I agree with @liriodendron :)  I would suggest the use  of a loam based growing medium ... John Innes No 3 would be ideal ... the multi-purpose composts are far too lacking in substance  for anything more than bedding plants and short term vegetable plantings.

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

  • Thank-you so much. I appreciate the replies. I can't say that I'm normally a fan of conifers but they are rather pretty and add good interest this time of year.

Cool! I didn’t even know variegated conifers existed!

Chamaecyparis pisifera 'Plumosa Albopicta' ; a slow growing variegated form of Cypress .
Those plants are a good few years old !

Did they come in those pots? If yes. The pots alone are worth more than you paid!
    In London. Keen but lazy.
