Transplanting Leylandi

I have a row of 20 x 8-10ft tall Leylandi that are in a raised sleeper trough approx 2 ft tall. I’d like to remove these and transplant them elsewhere in the garden. Does anyone know if they will survive this and also best way to do it?

  • You'd probably need a commercial digger to get a root ball big enough to transplant them. Frankly so many nicer hedging plants out there...

  • The Leylandi have only been in a few years and as the sleeper bed isn’t very tall I’m assuming that the rootball won’t be very big as would have been contained.

I’m removing to replace the hedge in the sleepers but I don’t want to throw away what’s there already as they are perfectly good plants and as long as Leylandi are trimmed and contained then they make a nice screen.
  • You can always make an exploratory dig and see for yourself... I'm firmly on the camp that would rather have yew than leylandii. They are unsuitable for a city garden no matter what. But if people have enough space and are good at caring for them...it can work.

  • If you could dismantle the sleeper raised bed (rebuilding it later) I would say that gives you the best chance of keeping the rootballs intact. You may then be able to undercut them at ground level, giving yourself up to 2ft depth of root for each plant. If you have to dig in from the top of the sleeper trough you have a greater risk of causing damage.
  • Good idea - thanks - think that is definitely worth a go
