By the way @Busy-Lizzie and @Silver surfer I have cleared a huge shrub area in the garden that was very overgrown and discovered a Lagerstroemia! Not huge, but looks so much better now it isn't covered by honeysuckle and a rambling rose of gigantic proportions.

I'm glad your shrubs arrived @D0rdogne_Damsel. Previous owner of my new house has told me about a fantastic nursery https://www.pepiniere-condemine-riberac.fr/. They had the Betula "Jaquemontii" that I had been looking for and Exochorda "The Bride" which did very well at my old house, and Sambucus Nigra "Black Lace". I've planted my new shrub bed, now I'm cardboarding and mulching.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
That's looking good already @Busy-Lizzie. Your OH won't recognise the place when he gets back. I looked up the GC, it does look super, about an hour and 3/4 for me, a nice trip out one day in the future hopefully.
I've got my two new shrubs in. They look a bit small now, but I am sure they will fill the gap nicely in the end. You can see in the picture I am in the process of having the hedge behind cut back, looks a bit odd at the moment. We're about halfway around the perimeter so far. Amazing how much extra light it lets in, hope to get the rest done by the end of next week. Slow process because of having to burn all the cuts to make room for the next batch, and of course you are up and down ladders all the time.
Hopefully then the light will be ok for my new babies, I shall try and make a note to post an 'after' picture at some point in the future. Once again thank you for all suggestions and advice.
