I've had Fatsia j. in several gardens I've had. They're very hardy, certainly coping with well below zero temps, even for prolonged periods. We have upwards of 60 frosts every year [including last year, which was not a 'proper' winter here] ice, snow, sleet, wind etc, and everything in between.  :)
The worst thing for them is snow, and it's wise to brush it off if more than an inch or two as it breaks the stems.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Ours has been here longer than we have (it was already mature in 1988 when we bought the house). It usually looks a bit ratty in spring but recovers well after cutting out the dodgy leaves and old flower heads. I cut out a few of the oldest stems most years, and it's been cut back to the ground twice and bounced right back each time. I've never bothered brushing off snow, but we don't often get a lot. I'll try to remember for next time though  .

Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained

I do that with lots of evergreens @JennyJ - like phormiums or rhodos etc. Anything with a stem, foliage or branch that can be easily damaged by the weight.  :)
I also do the same as you with my Fatsias - I take off stems which look lousy [usually quite a lot after winter!] and any that are just in the way. They're very accommodating plants.

One near us is flowering. Unusual because I never noticed it before. Maybe a good year for it.
  • Maybe that’s why I never noticed the plant being there till now :)

Thanks for all your comments, I think I’m going to give it a go in my garden! I found a lovely Spider’s web variety (with white speckled leafs) in a nursery.
