Planting a Peony

Sam76Sam76 Posts: 151
Hi All,
I ordered 3 Peony Sarah Bernhardt for my wife's birthday in December. They've arrived and I've potted them. Can we plant them out in December or should we wait until Spring? Also do you plant them just below the surface?
Thanks!

You can plant a potted specimen at any time, as long as the ground isn't frozen or waterlogged, but you wouldn't be planting peonies in ground that water logs anyway  ;)
Yes - don't plant any deeper than they are in the pots. I plant them slightly proud as we have wet conditions here, and that helps to prevent any rotting.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Just resurrecting this thread with a similar question. I received 2 bare root herbaceous peonies in the Autumn, potted them up and kept them in a coldframe over Winter. They are now both shooting and one has a tiny flower bud appearing.
Can l still plant them out now, or should l wait until Autumn?  They look healthy enough but l feel they might need potting on fairly soon.

You can plant them out now, @AnniD ..and they'll appreciate it. :)
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

Thanks @BobTheGardener, l may have to sacrifice a few wallflowers, but it will be worth it  :)
