New Bed from Grass.

My neighbour on the allotment wants me to create a new bed.......4 ' x 14' from an area that has been grassy area for over 10 years at least.

I will make a mound of the turfs/turves upside down so the grass will perish to give her just earth in due course.

She wants to be ablt to sow seeds in April/May.

Question please......What do i need to do to the new area so she can do so.

Thanks.

  • I have tried the no dig method (check out Charles Dowding) to create new flower beds in my garden. I marked out the area, used a half moon to remove a strip of grass around the perimeter, soaked cardboard and lay it on top of the grass, then added a very generous 6" layer of topsoil (I had some left over from a turf stack) and compost. 4 months later it was ready to plant and there was none of the back-breaking work associated with lifting the turf.

I chose to plant potatoes rather than ornamentals in year 1 to further break up the ground beneath. Having just harvested the potatoes I can report the soil has a beautiful crumb texture and is a joy to work with.

So long as the area you are looking at doesn't have pernicious weeds such a couch grass then you should be fine using this method.
