Thanks Ben. The bed in question is above the drive at the top of a 6-foot wall, and then slopes gently up to a shrub/tree area which protects it from the North and East. So the drainage is really good, lots of sun (and wind in winter!) and the soil isn't amazing. I'll chuck in some grit for good measure.
After all that, I popped to a local garden centre and picked up 4 decent-sized plants for £25 - a good buy I thought! They're in 1l pots and all have at least 2 strong growth points per pot. I've bought A. Africanus which I believe is evergreen (all blue).
One final question, is it possible to divide these now as with other perennials and pot on to strengthen them a bit? Or is that not the done thing with Agapanthus?
They can be divided, deciduous in Autumn and evergreen in Spring is the standard advice. However I think I would wait two or three years to allow them to bulk up before dividing them. Divide now and you’ll probably forfeit flowers for next year and even the year after.
