Where did I go wrong with forcing narcissi?

Hi everyone. For the first time, I bought specially prepared narcissi bulbs to grow inside for the winter. The paper whites all grew and are fine. The earlycheer which I put in a dark place in the shed to start them haven’t done very well. The top of the compost and some of the bulbs are covered in white fungus. The roots of the bulbs are massive and have come through the bottom of the pot. What has gone wrong?
