Avocado help please

Hi all,

Not a great gardener but I've been doing my best to look after an avocado plant a grew at the start of the year.  Once potted it didn't get off to a great start and all the colour went from the leaves and it was a bare stem but after that I did lots of reading and got it to a very healthy state.

To get it into this state I repotted it in better draining soil, ensure the pH level was keep around 6 and ensured it was never wet with help from a moisture meter.  It did fantastically well and grew big and very healthy looking until a couple of weeks ago I noticed browning on the leaves.

After a bit of reading I came to the conclusion it was a salt build it so repotted it again in a citrus potting mix and rinsed it through to clear it out but there's been no improvement.  pH level still sitting at 6 and the soil is just moist so it's not been over-watered.

Can anyone offer any insight into where I'm going wrong here?  It was looking so great for so long :(

Thanks in advance!

I grew one many years ago. It grew to a fair size, and even though it was indoors, it still lost quite a few leaves in autumn. Some years more than most. I wouldn't worry, as i think it is just reacting to the available light, and will hopefully come back strong next year.

I'm wondering if the atmosphere is a bit dry for the leaves. I've a healthy avacado currently growing out if the side of the compost bin!
  • I am amazed at how often I find sprouted avocado stones in my compost heap. I have memories from way back when people used to go to great lengths to put cocktail sticks in the sides of the stones and balance them over a jam jar of water to get them to grow.
