What's in the sachet?

Just out of curiosity, does anyone knows what's in the sachet of "flower food" attached to nearly every bunch of cut flowers?  I've found out the hard way that it's horribly sticky if it gets on skin or clothes.  One of these days, I'm going to put the flowers in two vases, one with the flower food and one with plain water, and see if it makes a jot of difference.  Perhaps we should be politely refusing them when we buy flowers, to reduce single-use plastic.

    A variation of bleach and sugar.
    That's what I use, as it does the same job on any cut flowers from the garden. I can't remember where I discovered it though  :)

    I can understand sugar, but bleach?  What does that do?  And why does it foam up when you add the water?

    Bleach to reduce bacteria that causes cloudy water and moldy stems.

    I watched a survival type programme on the TV, and someone started an instant fire by mixing a sachet with hydraulic fuel oil.
    A useless fact. :)

    The bleach 'sterilizes'  :)
