What's wrong with my lawn?

Hi all,

I'm new to gardening and lawns so need your help...

I've had a new lawn around 4 weeks ago, due to the wet weather we have been having I've not watered it as mother nature kindly did this for me :)  what I have noticed is this muddy/oily sort of patches across the turf.  Unsure what caused this or what to do resolve this, any ideas??

Thanks

It's just thatch, which is pretty normal for the time of year. I wouldn't worry about it.
Normally, you would use a rake to scrape it out, but as it's a very new lawn, I'd wait until spring to give it a chance to establish.
You would just rip out roots if you did anything just now  :)

  • I don't know if you have already been doing it, but the best piece of lawn advice I read on this forum was to not catch the clippings, and let them go back onto the lawn. Since I've been doing this the lawn completely sorted itself out.

You wouldn't be cutting it though - not at this time of year when it's only been down 4 weeks  :)

I think the most important thing to say is ‘keep off the grass’ this winter. I know it’s hard with a budding soccer international needing a practice pitch ... but the lawn will repay you in spades if you keep off if this winter, and you’ll have a much better lawn next summer if you can manage it 😊  ⚽️

💡 maybe a Keepie uppie  competition on that patio 😉

  • Thank you all for your responses :)  kids have stayed off the grass so far which is a miracle! Any suggestions on what to do with the grass?  Spoke to gardener he says do nothing but I'm not sure...
  • I think he’s right. I wouldn’t touch it until March unless we have a very mild winter and it grows and needs cutting.

If you do need to cut it, do it on a dry day when there’s no frost forecast and, most important of all, adjust the height of the mower blade so it cuts the grass at its highest ... more damage is done to a lawn by cutting it too short than almost anything else.

If in doubt come back here and check with us. 😊

    As I said - nothing  :)
It's far too new to be on it or doing anything to it  :)
