Bear in mind that almost all plants can be moved. Personally I am in the suck it and see dept. Have a walk around your area or other local spots or look at formal gardens online. Get some ideas what you like and then buy some plants to replicate this. I am sometimes guilty of stuffing as many plants in as I can but the areas that give me the most joy are where there are larger plantings of just a few species. I always try to have something in season / flower every single day of the year which I am now just about achieving. This requires planning something to take over as the last one fades. So many plants are easy to divide so don't worry about filling every gap as many perennials can double in size in a season. If you plan to enjoy gardening then just take your time and enjoy. Set a strict budget for weekly spending it at the start and stick to it. Changing things about is part of the fun and if you do the initial work you will learn lots. Good luck.
