Fungus

I have a fungus growing  horizontal  on front of my raised oak beds.
I don't know what kind it is or how to kill it. Anyone know as I have young grandchildren and don't  want them touching it. The green in it is remnants if Ivy and another plant I had hanging over edges. I have cut it all back away from it. Had the beds 2 years and 1st time I've had it. Found it all under my overhanging plants. I've  now scraped it all off and disposed of it properly but need to kill the spores for good.

  • It's a bracket fungus and they feed on dead wood. You can't kill it, as the bit you can see is only a small part of the whole. Its mycorrhizae will extend through the timber and the soil. It is probably harmless and will disappear in a few days.
If your grandchildren are old enough to understand, you can tell them about it and show them pictures of some other fungi like the fly agaric. Warn them that though they can look pretty, some of them can give you a very poorly tummy, so best not to touch them.
If they are too young to understand and obey this, then they shouldn't be in the garden alone. It's not just fungi that can be poisonous!
