Greenhouse

Hi everyone I've just become a member of the group so I'm a bit of a novice  although I do grow veg
I have a 6x8 concrete raised base in my garden and wanted to put a 8x6 greenhouse on it but the greenhouse measurements are larger so wondered if I got a 6x6 or 6x5 one how much could I grow in it, or has anyone ideas how I could place the 6x8 on the site

  • If you have a 6X8 concrete base and you're wanting to put an 8X6 green house on it, it will fit unless the base is undersize and or the greenhouse is oversize!!!...... Or is the door in the wrong place!?
  • Sorry i meant the concrete base is 8 x 6 and the greenhouse base measurements are 8ft5  and 6ft 3 according to the manufacturer

  • Hi philippa2
Yeah that's the problem unless I can find a solution to extend concrete base or certain fixings

I would measure the base exactly in millimetres and, having checked the base is level, send those dimensions to two or three of the major greenhouse suppliers seeing what they could offer you. At this time of year you might get a good discount.

Also, give them an indication of how much you want to spend. I would think an economy range greenhouse with some staging would be up to £750. The next price bracket might go up to £2000 and include companies like Elite and Rhino. Finally you have top quality, highly engineered greenhouses from people like Cultivar and Gabriel Ash which will cost multiple thousands.

  • Thanks everyone some good ideas there and never thought of contacting suppliers   :)
  • Wanted to order some greenhouse spares to re-erect a 2nd hand greenhouse a few weeks ago and some suppliers were saying delivery dates were delayed by 30 weeks. Yikes i phoned them before ordering the parts and was told the 30 week order to delivery timescale only applied to new / whole greenhouse orders!!

A bespoke greenhouse will probably cost a lot of money, far more than modifying the existing base or replacing it with a new base.   Think i would dig out a trench all the way around the existing base at least to the same depth as the existing base and box in (shaw up or add shuttering) as required and fill with concrete.

Or..... Dig out a trench all the way around the existing base at least to the same depth as the existing base and box in (shaw up or add shuttering) to a height no less than 2" higher than the existing base and support a piece of rebar mesh over the whole area and then and fill with concrete over the whole lot.  Essentially capping over the whole base making it look like a new base that will finish 2" higher.   The rebar mesh will hold it all together.

  • Problem there cottage compost there is a concrete path around the raised base, I did think about getting a concrete adhesive and putting that around and then putting quickdrying cement on top, I only need it to be about 6 inches wide and deep I would have to find someone to do it. I really dont want to get a smaller greenhouse then regret it
  • My 6x8 greenhouse was a freebie on Freecycle and is mounted on brieze blocks which have been tied with cement. So far so good. I  laid weed matting down inside as the base with 6 small half slabs to walk on on. Could you use blocks to extend your base area?
I find it just about big enough to grow 4 tomto plants, 2/3 chillie/bell pepper plants. I bought some staging but moved it outside this year and put trays of cutting, seedlings etc. on it.
No matter what size greenhouse you have, you will always wish it was bigger, much bigger!
  • Try raising help on Facebook, there's always a group of retired and semi retired tradesmen out there that are also gardeners that will help you out for next to nothing...... Bacon sandwich and a bottle of something.   I once asked for help to lift and move a serious metal rsj (Girder) 300yds down a narrow twisting footpath to be lifted into place and fitted on another day.  By the end of the day the volunteers had it in position and cemented into position, done!!!

Lockdown will no doubt get in the way but you have until Feb/March to get it done.

Try your local boys & girls in sheds, they're always looking for things to do for donations to fill up the tea and biscuit fund.

Lots of the greenhouse's 8x6 or 10x8 but these are guide measurements, most are actually nearer 8ft6"  x 6ft6". I have an elite on order and it's made clear on there website to wait for there base guidelines to come through before building a base. It's a bit counter intuitive to to me that they don't do accurate sizes on the sites
