Cheap Greenhouse

  • Thanks for the link Fairygirl. I'm looking at something walk in size though.
I'm starting to wonder if it would be better to wait a bit and save up for a "real" one, rather than waste time. Maybe keep an eye out for a local second hand one.

Ah - yes, not high enough, unless you're a Hobbit  :D
Some of the lean to ones aren't too dear. I'd thought of one when I was looking, and I seem to recall they weren't hideously expensive.
I'd have needed to use the space below my extension windows for it though, and I prefer to have plants there instead. The only other site would have been a bit too near the boundary fence, so I know what you mean about having one to suit the space you have.

Set up search alerts on Gumtree and eBay and sign up to Freecycle with email alerts. Greenhouses are popular at the moment but there are always a few about. I picked up a really good 6x4 Elite greenhouse from Gumtree last year for £100. It's a bit more effort to dismantle and clean them but worth it for what you can save.

If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

Hi @Glenjjones. Where in the country are you? I'm getting rid of my greenhouse, its aluminum and approx 6ft x 5ft. You would be welcome to it, if you can collect it.
  • I've got some "blow-aways" (I like that name, I think I'll refer to them as that from now on) and I think they're great.  Admittedly two are new this year and one is on its second year, so I can't really comment on their longevity.  I've got mine in quite a sheltered spot and I've got some heavy pots inside and pushed against the "wall" so it's slightly stretched and I think(hope) it will help prevent blowing away.  We had some pretty strong winds a couple of weeks back and they didn't budge.  Admittedly last year it blew round the garden a couple of times but I was foolish and had it in the middle of the garden.  Anyway, they stay surprisingly cosy and my plants were happy enough last year so I have high hopes (although last year was pretty mild!).
  • Hi gjautos,

I'm in South Wales, so your a bit far for me, but thank you very much for the offer. :)

I'm starting to wonder how much it would cost me to build my own from wood and Polycarbonate? I might give that some consideration.

I'd think that could be a good alternative @Glenjjones, if you're handy. Timber roofing battens would make a good support. I think making the frame to fit the polycarbonate sheets [where possible] would be a good approach too.  :)

Ours isn't massive or fancy, just a 6 by 8, costs us £500 5 years ago, in a half price, sale, neighbour got the 8 by 10, that was £1.000  Hubby made a cold frame, he used the bathroom window, which was wood and single glazed up to a couple of years ago, and scaffold boards for the frame, nothing fancy, as you see, we make do and mend.  (You should see my furniture!!)  Here is the SE polycarbonate sheets are really expensive.

I'm definitely an advocate for searching the ' free sites' etc. I've been lucky enough to obtain a couple of aluminium framed 6×8 greenhouses. I had to disassemble and collect but many people have inherited greenhouses and no longer want them. I bought a few sheets of polycarbonate to replace any broken glass and you may need some new clips and seals but all in I've probably spent less than £100 and I have 2 greenhouses, one at home and one on the allotment.
I've tried the ' cheap' polytunnels, and they're ok as a starting point, but the covers barely last 2 years and however well you weight them down, they will find a way to get airborne if the wind gets up.
