Privacy ideas.

Hi Everyone,
A little bit of advice and ideas please.
We have recently bought our first house and have just had some level raised beds built on our sloping garden.
The plan is to hide the first floor and the main door of the block of flats behind our garden. We where thinking of planting clumping bamboo the entire way across both sides.
Behind the fence is a small carpark for the flats and we want to add some privacy, especially in the bottom corner of the garden.

Recommendations please as we are very new to the gardening world. Thank You!

Bamboo is best avoided to be honest, for reasons I won't bore you with  ;)
    Take a look here

I think you need to address those gaps at the bottom though. You'll need to fill those, and line the beds or the soil will just fall through  :)

Are the beds not lined? That's never a good idea. The timber sucks up a lot of moisture, which makes it worse for plants. Raised beds drain more quickly too.
A lining helps protect the timber too.  :)

  • They are lined with a membrane at the bottom.

Unfortunately, that won't help, and can actually prevent roots getting down properly, especially for bigger shrubs or trees. That's fine for planting perennials or veg, as they don't have such deep roots, but it's an obstruction for bigger planting.
It isn't any use for lining beds either as it's porous - needs to be plastic on them.

  • Unfortunately that's too late now, as its done and we have 4 tone of top soil on top. With this in mind, any suggestions?

I'd take a look on that thread I gave a link to. Similar situation.  :)

You'll need to do a lot watering to establish planting, and to keep it healthy long term. Mulching and feeding, where appropriate too. The soil level always sinks over time.
It's quite low as it is, so as much organic matter as possible should be added before planting, and then on a regular basis    :)

  • It seems the best advice to give people, is don't buy new built houses...how they pack them together nowadays is absolutely ridiculous. And those tiny depressing windows.

  • @amancalledgeorge Thank you for the very useful advice and unwelcome comment.
p.s - We have lovely big bay windows.
  • Well, my first post on this website has been a very negative experience so far. I hoped for better.
