Bare Root Wallflowers - to trim or not to trim...

Taking inspiration from Monty's planting of tulips in a pot topped off with wallflowers, I decided to swap out the tete-a-tete bulbs I was going to use as a top layer. I couldn't find any plug plants so bought some 8" bare root wallflowers and have potted them up. To me they look a bit lanky to go through Winter and produce a good show of flowers in Spring. Do you think I should chop them back before then to help bulk them up and if so, by approximately how much? I only planted them 3 days ago so if I do go for the chop perhaps I should leave them to establish a bit longer first....? Grateful for any advice.

  • Here's a photograph.
  • Oh dear, well they were pretty soggy when I bought them. I did wonder if I'd planted too many... perhaps I can leave them in situ and see what happens over the next few weeks and yank out those that look like a fail. And then chop back the good ones to encourage stronger growth...?
  • OK, thanks for your advice!
