We’ve just adopted this house plant from a friend, it’s definitely seen some better days! Can anyone identify it for me and give me some tips on bringing it back to its former glory? Thanks
It looks like some variety of dracaena. Nothing to be done about the crispy leaf tips.. I would just trim off the crispy part. I think you can cut them off six inches from where they grow out of the stem and they will grow new branches. Not sure though, never tried it myself.
Re-potting it into something larger, using a mixture of multi-purpose and John Innes compost should help. Make sure you uncurl any circling roots when you do it.
Use a pot with drainage holes. You can sit it inside something more decorative if you want, but don't let the plant sit in water. Best to dunk it to make sure the compost is properly wet, then let it drain and then put it back. Water again when the soil feels dry a fingertip down. That way you should avoid any more brown tips.
There's some nice new growth there, it should soon start to look better.
