What plant to use instead of hard lawn edging?

Overhanging plants are my most favourite way how to do grass edging and I am always looking for plants that work well in that role. When this is done well, the plants overhang just enough to stop the grass growing into the border but allow mowing under it and the whole edge looks blended and natural. Lavender is my favourite for this, other subshrubs and shrubby perennials work well too. Some plants are better with a support to lift them slightly, but only if the support can be completely hidden and invisible.
The idea with the geranium doesn't make sense to me. It would look too messy. Rozanne is a very messy plant no matter how you use it and I can't imagine this looking good.

Mexican Fleabane is amazing  plant and will only grow along the edge without spreading into the grass especially if you edge it with bricks perhaps. Not invasive but entwines itself. They are tough and resilient to most plant problems.  They flower endlessly, low maintenance and so pretty. Mine is still producing hundreds of little flowers now! Seen it cascading down footsteps in mansion gardens, and Greek islands paths line with this pretty flowers. My front drive has this plant along the edges and prevents weeds growing. It does not grow on the driveway at all.  A well behaved plant.

I got fed up years ago of trying to keep a neat gap around the lawn edges without butchering the neighbouring plants (and my sandy soil tends to crumble when you try to edge the lawn with a spade or edging iron). I bit the bullet and put in an edging of block pavers, which gives the plants room to overhang without flopping over the grass.
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained
