I also meant to add - a few things for spilling over the edges is always a nice idea. Aubretia is easy if there's a decent amount of sun, and there are Alpine phloxes and Arabis which are also good, as long as the soil is well enough drained. Euonymous is a great suggestion - easy to trim if needed, as @AnniD says.
One thing that's worth doing is to make a note of the eventual size of plants [it's always just a an approximation] and when you have a list of what you fancy, place some pots or canes etc, in position, marking the eventual sizes, to give you an idea of how many plants you need. It's easy to think you need twice the amount, so it's good to hold back a bit. Easier, and cheaper, to add some later, rather than having to pull plants out
