Monkey puzzle

I’ve got the most beautiful monkey puzzle tree which is roughly 22yrs old. It is one of the nicest specimens I’ve ever seen. It was planted in my rockery about 25ft away from house, worried it may upset house foundations? Can anybody give advice. It’s towering above my house now and is quite a spectacle. At Xmas time we decorate it and it can be seen for miles. I have two problems with it1. Roots how far do they go.
2. It has a branch from bottom of tree going up just beside trunk and is getting as tall as the main tree. Does this need cut? It is so healthy just now and the bottom doesn’t seem to be going brown like many other trees.

  • I'm sorry, I don't know the answer to this. What I do know is that Bicton Park in Devon has a magnificent avenue of these trees. I wonder if a call to the head gardener would give you the necessary information.

I think the branch you mention that has turned upwards and growing skyward will end up trying to compete with the leader and probably needs pruning out, but I am no expert. You really do have a beautiful tree.

They grow very well here. There are loads of them round my area - and many are much closer to houses than that  :)
Many of them become 'multi stemmed'. I don't know anyone who's ever had a problem with them.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
