Small hedge to stop puppy

  • All our dogs have, from puppies, been with their ‘main human’ when not asleep, from about 16 weeks old ... but to be fair these have been dogs growing up on the farm or on the smallholding ... they’ve trotted around behind ‘their human’, being spoken to and interacted with almost constantly ... just as Nigel was with Monty. That’s the way we’ve always ‘trained’ our dogs and they’ve never been destructive.

Puppies grow faster than hedges.  Definitely a fence would be better.
  • 1 - Make it taller than 40cm.
2 - Put a suitable mesh fence in a position where the hedge will "absorb" it.

  • I took on a 5yr old dog who had never had a garden to run free in. I bought a roll of plastic fencing, around 3ft high, threaded bamboo canes down through the holes at intervals which I pushed into the ground. I put it around the edge of my veg. patch, it also stops my neighbours cats from using my freshly prepared seed beds as a toilet. It can easily be removed if wished. I also use a single word said forcefully when the dog goes onto other areas where I do not want him to.  OFF! and point away to a path. Lots of praise when he obeys.I have stopped using treats now as I realised he was deliberatley going onto ""no go"  areas in anticipation of a treat reward when I corrected him!
Puppies are simply exploring and discovering their world. Everything is exciting, fun and interesting. They have learn what boundaries are to stay safe and please you. Nothing is sacred to them, even if it is your most treasured plants.
  • Thank you for the ideas I’ll give them a go
