Conifer going brown

I have a conifer that has always looked healthy until recently.  I have raised the canopy slightly earlier in the year but not pruned it.  Does anyone think the tree will recover or is it a lost cause?

It won't regrow from those brown sections. They're dead.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Does the brown are usually continue to overtake the health looking green growth?

It can do. It depends how far gone the tree is, and whether it's been caused by drought [the most likely reason]  or something else.
Many shrubs and trees have suffered in the last couple of years, as many areas have suffered so much drought for long spells. It can take a while for the effects of that to show up.
