Iris sprouts in November??🤷‍♀️

Hi

I'm relatively new to proper gardening as I inherited a garden when we've moved house this summer. I have planted several pots up this year (while waiting to see what actually comes up in the garden after ALOT of clearing) .

I'm really confused/worried... I planted some Dutch Iris bulb's at the beginning of October and I went out on the 1st of November to shoots!

Whilst a definite boost after this weekends announcement, I've then begun to worry as we've not really had much frost up here yet (I leave in Glossop, up at the north top of the Peak District)

So my question to you more experienced gardeners is - will I loose them? Is tt here anything I can do? Or is it normal? 🙈

It's nothing to worry about - growth slows as temps drop. However, the pots aren't properly filled, so it would be worth doing that. There's far too big a gap between the soil level and the pot edge. You should only have around an inch gap there   :)
The bulbs could be planted a bit on the shallow side in that trough, which can deter flowering. Always better to have bulbs slightly deeper rather than shallow, with a couple of exceptions.
I'd get them up on feet too to help with drainage on that paved ground. They need good drainage  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • I agree with Fairy ... nothing to worry about other than the need to fill the pots up. An inch from the rim is fine. Do it now and it’ll be no problem ...
enjoy them in the spring 😊

  • Thank you.... They've got drainage holes on the bottom but I'll raise them. I didn't want to over fill 🙊🙈 so I'll add some more compost this afternoon
