House Plant ID

Blue OnionBlue Onion Posts: 2,995
I picked this up from my locally owned garden center with a hand written label of 'Baby Toes'.  All that comes up in searches is the succulent and a few others, and I have been unable to identify this specific plant variety.  Any suggestions?

Employee said it hates to be watered from above and hates wet foliage.

That looks very saxifragy to me, one of the London pride group. I'd be tempted to say sedum spurius but the length of the leaf stems look more saxifrage like. If it is either of those then it's an alpine not a house plant though. If it is definitely a house plant I'd start looking at Kalanchoes but you may be waiting for this one to flower before you can get a better answer.

Thanks @wild edges.  There were whole flats of them, and many of them were quite trailing in habit.  They did remind me of Kalamchoes, but I couldn't find any varieties which such tiny leaves.

I will keep an eye for flowers.

Had another look this evening and discovered some rather insignificant flowers.. whiteish yellow-green.  Maybe that will help with the ID?  I might have to call up the GC tomorrow and ask the owners.

  • To me that says saxifrage but I’m not as knowledgeable on alpines and succulents as @wild edges is.

Any chance of a closer photo of the flower? Have a look at Plectranthus species maybe prostratus and see if they match.

Sure, I will do that when I get home.  Not enough natural/good light for a good shot last night.

@wild edges Thanks so much for your help in identification.

I ended up phoning the garden center, and the owner identified it as Pilea depressa.. and the internet calls it 'Baby Tears' rather that 'toes'.. but that is the thing with common names, I suppose.  'Baby toes' labeled plants sells better than 'baby tears', I expect.
