Raspberry plants how to improve soil

I want to improve the soil on allotment before planting new raspberry canes   Presently it’s heavy and very wet.    Recommendations please.     Grit?  Sand ? Manure ?   Or shall I put the canes in large pots ??

  • I would use grit and manure to improve heavy soil.
I don’t think pots work for the more usual types of raspberry ... it makes it very difficult to provide adequate supports for tying in the canes.

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

Definitely plenty of organic matter. They like moisture, but won't like being waterlogged.
If you can pile stuff on now, it'll get worked in over winter, and you can then add more compost etc when you plant, keeping the ground higher too, like a little ridge,  if the soil is still a bit heavy.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
