Poor draining soil that just won't amend!

    Pea gravel isn't angular @grantcstewart - it's quite rounded, but very useful for heavier soil too. 
    The sand is important though - it needs to be the gritty type. You could make the problem worse if it's builders' sand. Just putting a layer of 'stuff' on top of heavy clay won't work either if the clay is solid lower down. 
    The best way to amend and improve clay is to add organic matter - well rotted manure, compost , leaf mould etc. That improves the soil structure.  :)

  • The best thing to use is horticultural sharp grit. Pea gravel is much more smooth and rounded.

    I'd need to be multi millionaire if I was to buy enough horticultural grit for conditions here - and it isn't even a big garden  :D
