Yesterday I wrapped all mine up into newspaper and packed them in a box in the shed where they'll stay untouched until next spring. I find it easier to divide in the spring when you can see the eyes starting to grow. I have left some in the ground (covered in a mound of compost) and others in pots (also covered in compost) over the years, and all have been ok. I'm in Lincolnshire.
I wrap my dried off tubers in newspaper and lay them out in banana trays from the supermarket. I stack them somewhere cool and check them occasionally, and then pot them up when signs of growth begin to show.
I pot mine up into pots with used tomato compost . They sit under the bench in the greenhouse all winter. When they start shooting in Spring I top dress with good compost and some feed.
If you split them, you would need growing points (at or near the bases of the old stems) on each piece, which is tricky. A detached tuber on its own won't grow. If you want more of a particular variety, take cuttings from the new shoots in spring (the parent plant will grow more).
