Is raised bed liner needed to protect brick wall?

Hi, I'm thinking of creating a raised bed out of garden sleepers, between two existing brick-built raised beds. It will also have a brick garden wall (which is a boundary wall, but is not part of a house or building) at the back. If I do this, I will only need to build the front. My question is though, should I use waterproof liner to protect the 3 brick sides?

  • not essential for structural purposes, but would help prevent water and possibly algal staining of the brickwork

The brickwork will also soak up a lot of water which isn't helpful.

An alternative to plastic lining is to paint it using black-jack or similar. We used it and it was very effective on a brick wall planter arrangement. If for a veg bed then plastic may be a more conservative option.
  • You need to be sure that the brick wall is sound.

Technically if it does not belong to you, you need to clear it with the neighbour.

Argh this is making me nervous about the raised bed I inherited next to my outhouse. It was like that when I moved in but I have raise the soil level a bit, and the outhouse is joined to my house, which can't be good. I know what I'd advise other people to do, but being arsed to actually sort it out myself is another matter...

  • Yes, we will check the wall is sound before we do anything. We would only be filling in a gap between two other raised beds that also use the wall (were there when we moved in a few months ago), but we'll double check just in case it's been damaged, which at the moment is hidden by the shed (which I have to find room for its contents before I can sell it).
